Fall 2010 TRINITY Magazine, Career and Calling: Called to Lead
Myron Graham ’04
Major: Social work
Title: Case manager, autism comprehensive training supervisor, day services supervisor, and DT II liaison
“By overcoming extreme odds, people with disabilities often provide a keen insight into the untapped potential of mankind,” said Myron Graham ’04, an alumnus who has worked at Elim Christian Services in Palos Heights, Illinois, for the past four years. “As we use our gifts to help them realize theirs, we unlock a deeper perspective on the purpose and meaning of life.”
Graham serves as a case manager, autism comprehensive training supervisor, day services supervisor, and DT II liaison (developmental training). Within these leadership responsibilities fall the daily interactions focused on behavior management, vocational skill development, and life skills training.
After Trinity, Graham earned his Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. Today he finds great joy in his work, a calling in which he can maximize his gifts of creativity and enjoy autonomy in programming decisions that are focused on helping differently-abled adults reach their highest God-given potential. Traveling abroad as part of his job helps Graham learn about best practices in other countries, which in turn helps professionals like himself improve treatments for those with disabilities in the United States.
“In this country, we have a wealth of resources, but Down Syndrome in South Africa is the same as Down Syndrome in Kansas,” he said. “By traveling to other countries, some of which have less resources than the U.S., we can glean innovative ways to address the emerging needs of this often invisible population.”
Elim isn’t the only place benefiting from Graham’s belief that God gifts people to “help each other reach their highest potential.” A few years ago, Graham and his wife, Kim ’04 (Ritzema), started the organization Supported Employment for Youth with Learning Disabilities (SEYLD), serving the south suburban community of Harvey.
