Title: Elementary English teacher, South Korea
Two months after finishing my internship in the Semester in Ecuador program and graduating from Trinity with a BSW degree, I decided to move to South Korea. I am an elementary (1st-6th grade) English teacher for a program called TaLK . It is a Korean government scholarship program designed to support public English education in the rural areas of Korea, where the access to higher quality educational resources are limited.
I saw this opportunity as another stepping-stone after returning from Ecuador to continue to expand my global mindset. This program has allowed me to enhance my understanding of international education and has deepened my appreciation for people from diverse backgrounds.
Most importantly, it has allowed me to practice my social work skills. Here, I am able to engage and communicate with diverse populations and groups of all sizes. My verbal and non-verbal communication skills have definitely been challenged. Removing biases, having the willingness to adapt, and respecting the norms of your clients’ community are essential skills needed in the international social work profession. Trinity’s social work classes, internship, service events, and conferences have definitely equipped me to be an asset in my current work.
