“Being a Christian business person and professor is not only an incredible responsibility, but an incredible opportunity as well.”
Assistant Professor of Business Kyle Harkema brings his past business experience and knowledge to the classroom. Before joining the faculty at Trinity, Harkema served as the assistant administrator of Maximum Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. in Munster, Indiana, where he oversaw the creation of a new hospice branch. This opportunity to serve those in the last stages of life helped shape Harkema’s approach to business and he shares this connection with students. Prior to his work in healthcare, Harkema spent eight years building a transportation business with his family; that is where he was first exposed to the challenges and excitement of entrepreneurship, and he has been fascinated with the field ever since.
“One of my main goals as a Christian educator is to help students realize that the business field is a mission field,” said Harkema. “When we realize that God has placed us into the line of business that we are in and that we are called to be witnesses to those around us, every new person we come in contact with through our business proceedings is someone we can touch with the gospel.”
This approach to “business field as mission field” informs Harkema’s teaching style and emphasis in the classroom where his students are encouraged to view their future employers, co-workers, clients, and competitors from an “eternal perspective.”
Harkema joins the Trinity faculty after achieving a bachelor’s of science degree with majors in marketing and human resource management and a master’s of business administration with concentrations in entrepreneurship and leadership/change management.
