NursingDr. Sarah Gouwens found in nursing that she has “myriad places where [her] faith and discipline intersect.”
Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and continuing on to earn her masters in nursing from Rush University, Gouwens quickly became accustomed to serving others, a task that closely tied into her faith.
“My relationship with Jesus guides my everyday life. I express my love for him through my words and actions, always mindful to bring him glory,” Gouwens said. “As his disciple, I am guided to spread the good word of his salvation. It is my deepest desire to experience him in worship, prayer, and learning his will.”
Working as a registered nurse since 2006 has allowed Gouwens a balance for her discipline and her faith, where she has been able to serve others with a Christ-like attitude and to administer to her patients and co-workers as a servant of the Lord.
“As a nurse I work with diverse populations every day, both clients and colleagues,” Gouwens said. “Working with many different populations has given me the opportunity to learn many different spiritual, cultural, and traditional beliefs. Learning about others beliefs has allowed me to provide better service as well as provide proper education styles.”
Today she also takes her service into the classroom where she uses her experiences and her beliefs to educate her students both in nursing and in finding the ways in which their discipline and faith intersect.
