Mission
Offering excellent musical and academic training within the context of a Christian liberal arts curriculum, the music department offers students the opportunity to enter into an educational community characterized by:

  • a focus on Christian formation
  • a focus on Christian community
  • a focus on fully engaged participation
  • a focus on living out and living into God’s reign on earth
  • a focus on hospitality
  • a focus on wisdom and on excellence
  • a focus on exploring connections among ideas and disciplines

Learning outcomes

Complimentary to the Foundations Learning Outcomes to be achieved by all Trinity students, students graduating with a major in music (including Music, Music Education, Music Production, and Music and Worship) will achieve the following learning outcomes.

  1. Christian formation. The student will articulate an understanding of music and of their vocation as a musician within the context of a Reformed Christian worldview. (MUSC 260, 360, 401, PHIL 331)
  2. Generosity. The student will exhibit hospitality by listening to and seeking to understand and appreciate the music of others (including others present in the classroom and people of other times and places), by sharing their musical life with others, and by receiving the gifts of the music of others.   3. Creativity. The student will compose and perform music with sensitivity to style, composer’s intent, aesthetic considerations, and personal interpretation. (private lessons, ensembles, MUSC 260, 307, 360, 401)
  4. Connection. The student will explore relationships in music, including the relationship between music and culture, the relationship of music to other music, the relationship of music to other disciplines, and their own relationship to music.   5. Content. The student will demonstrate expertise in the discipline of music as defined by the National Association of Schools of Music (requirements for a liberal arts degree with a major in music https://nasm.arts-accredit.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/01/M-2019-20-Handbook-02-13-2020.pdf). Students will demonstrate expertise in the following areas of music study:
    1. performance and musicianship (private lessons, ensembles, piano proficiency, guitar proficiency, MUSC 260, 331, 360, 401)
    2. theory (MUSC 201, 203, 204, 307, 401)
    3. history and literature (private lessons, ensembles, MUSC 111, 252, 261, 361, 401)
    4. aesthetics (private lessons, ensembles, MUSC 111, 307, 401, PHIL 331)
