Message From Assistant Professor

And just like that, another year comes to a close! For me this school year was like no other as it represented my first as a part of the Trinity Christian College community. Over the course of this year one of the things that has struck me most about our department is how much joy there is for the vocation of teaching.
I’ve been fortunate to be able to see this joy in conducting more than 40 classroom observations this year. Each of you went above and beyond in welcoming students back to the classroom and navigating the challenges of making sure each child’s needs were met. Beyond the classroom, I’ve had the chance to witness the joy in collaborations between professors and students as we have:
- Revived clubs such as Best Buddies that provide an important service to the community.
- Provided professional development opportunities for K-12 partners.
- Established partnerships with multiple local K-12 schools that provide academic and extra-curricular support.
- Created and collaborated with other departments to provide on-campus learning events such as the Math Triathlon and Young Authors Festival.
These examples are a small sample of the great work that has been done this year and I look forward to the ways we will continue to grow and share our joy. I hope everyone has restful summer- you have earned it!
Michael A. Dieter, Ed.D.
Assistant Professor | Department of Education
Congratulations Class of 2022!

The Department of Education would like to extend our congratulations to all program completers from December 2021 and May 2022. In particular, we want to acknowledge our future teachers and leaders for all their hard work and achievements. Over 30% of the total 2022 graduating class were Education graduates!
- 52 Undergraduates
- 11 Graduates
We would like to also congratulate our 22 Licensure candidates from December 2021 and May 2022 on their achievement!
Commissioning of Educators Ceremony/Luncheon
On May 5th, the Education Department recognized and celebrated 38 student teachers and 12 education licensure candidates during the Commissioning of Educations Ceremony and Luncheon.
“Commissioning is a special celebration for our students and a wonderful chance for our faculty and staff to wish them well as they enter the education profession. We truly hope and pray that all of our teacher candidates find joy and hope in their calling, and that they continue to grow and serve with excellence as they faithfully answer the call the Lord has placed on their lives.” -Dr. Lenarz

Young Authors Reception & Festival Welcomes 230+ Students

After a 2-year break due to Covid, the Education Department was delighted to host the Young Authors Reception & Festival on April 25 & 26. Award-winning author, illustrator, and cartoonist Ben Hatke was featured at the Young Authors Reception. Ben delivered multiple workshops to the students, and graciously signed books for the Trinity community. The event welcomed school partners, students, families, and volunteers to Trinity campus. Over the course of 2 days, we were honored to collaborate with:
- 10 schools (Illinois & Indiana)
- 230+ elementary students
- 42 AMAZING Trinity student leaders
- 31 adult helpers
- 7 committee members
And through these collaboration, we hope to inspire the next era of Trinity students and future authors.

Meet Rapher Ryan, a current Student Teacher at West Aurora High School.
When Professor Cerney went to see Rapher for an observation, he sent us this email. “I went to see Rapher for one of his observations. For his Adapted PE class, Rapher and his cooperating teacher set up a Mario Kart themed game. Most importantly, Rapher and his cooperating teacher dressed up to get the kids even more excited! The students went crazy for this lesson and I will be honest, this made my entire week! It’s so great that we have students like Rapher representing Trinity!”
When asked what he enjoyed most about this experience, Rapher replied, “I most enjoyed being able to connect with my students. Throughout my time teaching, I made it a point to make sure my students felt successful and supported. Students would talk to me about extracurricular activities, jobs, and hobbies they enjoyed which allowed me to support them outside of the classroom.
We love to see the amazing impact that Trinity students are having in their student teaching experiences! Please share your experience with education@trnty.edu.

Project Echo
Our first year of ECHO at Trinity has come to a conclusion. We were able to meet 16 times virtually to learn about Promoting Appropriate Behavior in the Classroom. We are reviewing the data and hope to have ECHO Education at Trinity again in the fall. If you have any topics you would be interested in hearing about, please let us know at ECHO@trnty.edu.

Professional Development Series

Our Professional Development Series wrapped up with a final session, hosted by Dr. Bill Boerman-Cornell, Professor of Education. Bill presented Workshop III: Improving Class Discussion (1 hour session) on April 27.
“It was enjoyable to have an interactive session. The Trinity teacher community has a lot of experience and it was fun to not only present some new information and research about teaching with discussion, but also to hear some of the approaches that Trinity teachers have developed on their own. The TEACH sessions are developing into an important way to keep the Trinity Educaiton community connected..” – Dr. Boerman-Cornell
Please stay tuned as we announce our next TEACH series session dates.

Award-winning author, illustrator, and cartoonist Ben Hatke will be featured at the Young Author’s Reception on April 25 at 6:30 pm, part of the Education Department’s Annual Young Author’s Festival. The reception is open to the public.
Hatke is best known for the picture books Little Robot and the Julia’s House series, for the middle grades graphic novels in the Zita the Spacegirl series and the Mighty Jack series. Hatke has won the Cybills Award, an Eisner Award, and will likely win many more awards in the years to come.
He has visited Trinity once before, and the students who came to the Young Author’s Festival found him to be energetic, engaging, friendly, talented, and encouraging. In his spare time, Hatke is a bouncing, superhero-ish dad who loves his family, good stories, and strange but cute little creatures including trolls. We are all excited to welcome him back to Trinity.
Hatke’s books will be available for purchase and to be signed at the reception.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION OPERATIONS

Welcome to our April issue of Trinity’s Education Department Newsletter.
I had to think long and hard about what to write for an opener for this newsletter. For those of you that don’t know me, I’m a big fan of data and numbers. For me, the use of numbers helps to tell our story- and our story in the Education Unit is a great one! So, bear with me as I share a few numbers with you:
- 100%. We have students in ALL three programs on campus (traditional, adult, and graduate)
- 34%. The percentage of Trinity students that are Education students.
- 15%. Out of all courses offered at Trinity in the fall, 15% are scheduled and staffed by Education Unit instructors.
We are so happy that the Education Unit is growing in our offerings too! We have new graduate programs that just started in January!
Sara Baillie Gorman, EdD, BCBA
Director of Education Operations | Associate Professor
Young Authors Festival
The Education department is thrilled to welcome author, Ben Hatke, 10 partner schools, and over 230 aspiring young authors to campus for the Young Authors Festival – April 25 & 26. We invite our Trinity Community to the Young Authors Reception on Monday, April 25 at 6:30pm!

Meet Tommy Horton, a current Student Teacher at Dwight D. Eisenhower High School. Tommy started Inclusive Brewing (coffee cart) as a work practice opportunity for adult transition students. The shop is open on Monday and Friday mornings for students, staff, and administration to purchase coffee and snacks. Inclusive Brewing is self sustaining and emphasizes practicing social, vocational, and math skills in a mock workplace setting.
Judy Stellato, College Supervisor, had a chance to visit Tommy when his Inclusive Brewing Wagon was open for business. “Tommy’s energy and passion for helping his students combined with his experience working for Starbucks has resulted in a wonderful, unique opportunity for his students. His students are given the responsibility to take the orders, make and serve as well as managing the payments. Tommy allows the students to gradually take on more responsibility. He also uses every chance to include the rest of the students in the school when possible, such as having them decorate the individual cup holders.”

We love to see the amazing impact that Trinity students are having in their student teaching experiences! Please share your experience with education@trnty.edu.
Grumpus
Anyone who has been around campus a while knows about OPUS. We are so excited to have OPUS on campus and in person again on April 20th! Did you know about GRUMPUS though?
The Graduate Research Unveiling Masters Presentations Understandings and Scholarship (GRUMPUS) is the Graduate student extension to OPUS.
Please come walk through our poster session that evening to learn about our graduate research! Details will be available on the OPUS schedule.

For every incoming class, our Founders’ Scholars stand apart even amongst their exceptional peers. Normally, Trinity designates two incoming freshmen to receive the prestigious, full-tuition Founders’ Scholarships. Yet thanks to the generosity of our donor community, Trinity has been able to designate five Founders for the Class of 2026.
These five students demonstrated outstanding spiritual, academic, and social leadership:
- Carvel Anderson
- Caitlin Haverdink
- Mia Musick
- Grace Steenwyk
- Anika Wicker
Carvel Anderson, a native of Chicago, is a representative in his high school student government and a member of the Black Student Union. The future elementary education major also served as a Mikva Summer Fellow, where he interned with an elected official. Anderson has also been named a Diversity Scholar with Trinity.
A native of Hudsonville, Mich., Caitlin Haverdink plans to earn a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Trinity. She has been involved with golf, musical theater, and service projects. Haverdink also participates in the Spiritual Leadership Team at her school and with the praise team and nursey at her church.
Mia Musick, from Fisher, Ill., is considering majoring in psychology or social work. She is currently involved in student government and the National Honor Society at her high school and also plays the saxophone. One of five girls, she also competes in sports and serves as an FCA group leader. Musick is also a member of the gospel choir and preschool volunteer at her church.
Grace Steenwyk is from Zeeland, Mich., where she plays volleyball and soccer. She plans to continue her volleyball career as a Trinity Troll, as well as to participate in Trinity’s Honors Program. She is currently involved in the National Honor Society and student leadership. Steenwyk plans to major in psychology.
Anika Wicker grew up traveling the world with her parents, Lloyd ’97 and Heidi (Boeck) ’98, as her father serves as a Navy Chaplain. Wicker has participated in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) for four years and is currently a commanding officer. Wicker, who is planning to major in special education, plays piano and guitar and sings, and advocates against human trafficking through the Dressember Foundation.
Trinity is excited to welcome these newest Founders’ Scholars to campus this fall! Said Professor of Communication Arts and Co-Director of the Honors Program Craig Mattson, Ph.D., “Hearing about our new Founders is electric. I watched these people doing collaborative problem-solving in high-stakes conditions. They are extraordinary.”
For 45 years, the Chicago Semester program has been providing opportunities for students to gain real world experience in an exciting big city. Along with many Trinity students who have taken advantage of everything that the program and the city of Chicago have to offer, several professors from the College will be participating in Chicago Semester’s Summer 2022 Scholar-In-Residence program.
Scholars will spend two weeks living in downtown Chicago with access to the workspaces at 1871, where Chicago Semester’s offices are located and where Trinity is a University Partner.
“The purpose of the Chicago Semester Scholar-In-Residence Program is to build relationships with faculty from our founding institutions by offering opportunities to nurture their research through resources available in Chicago,” said Chicago Semester Executive Director Mackenzi Huyser.
The Scholars-In-Residence professors from Trinity include:
— Bill Boerman-Cornell, Professor of Education
—Kaleb Dean, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design
— Craig Mattson, Professor of Communication Arts
— Ben Snoek, Campus Pastor
— Michael VanderWeele, Professor Emeritus of English
They will join colleagues from Calvin University, Central College, and Hope College.
The mission of Chicago Semester is to provide urban experiential education from a Christian perspective that equips students for integrated personal, professional and public lives. Chicago Semester envisions a just, generous and hospitable world where individuals are invested deeply in place and with each other as they serve joyfully and fearlessly on their vocational journey.

Welcome to the first ever edition of Trinity’s Education Department Newsletter. We are excited about this debut and thankful to the faculty and staff who made this possible.
So where should I start?
Serving with Excellence in Education, that’s where! This phrase should sound familiar to you; it is our department motto after all. Serving God and others is one of the most important principles of the Christian faith, and it is a tenet we hold strongly to here in the Education Department at Trinity Christian College. 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” This statement helped early church Christians know how to live both individually and collectively in a way that would glorify God. That’s what we are all about! Is this going to be easy? No way! But I guarantee it is going to be rewarding for you and for all of us together. I am thankful for each of you and the role you play in this collective commitment to serving God, others, and the education profession in a spirit of excellence. What you find in this newsletter are examples of ways and instances of people who are doing just this.

More than a dozen professionals in K-12 education (both Christian and Public) attended our first workshop of the Spring 2022 Series. Dr. Michael Dieter, Assistant Professor of Education, presented Promoting Classroom Comfort and Student Success Through Trauma Informed Practices (1 hour session).
“As educators we want what’s best for our students. It was great to be able to present to and also engage in conversation with educators who are working to ensure that all of their students are safe and successful. What happens outside of the classroom has a tremendous impact on what happens inside and the more we collaborate, especially about a topic such as trauma, the more we will best be able to meet the individual needs of students.” – Dr. Dieter

Alumni Spotlight
Meet Sarah Rodgers, a Trinity double Education alum, who is spreading her knowledge to make the world more accessible and inclusive. Sarah is also an amazing adjunct in our Education Department.
Sarah has been actively collaborating with her church on a project related to her field of expertise. “Three years ago, I co-founded the Bridging Abilities Ministry at my church. This ministry focuses on helping individuals with disabilities and their families feel welcomed and comfortable coming to church. Over the last few years, we have had quarterly events called, “Funtastic Friday,” in which the participants with special needs come to have fun with a peer pal and participate in different activities. The parents of these individuals also come and participate in a parent reception as they learn about the resources that can help serve their child and their family through the IEP process and through post-transition age funding.”
“As part of this ministry, my church decided to use their Christmas Eve offering to fund the construction of an inclusive playground on church property. This is a playground that will allow all kids to be welcomed and play together–it will be the first one in Lake County, IL!”

Dean of Education │ Associate Professor
Project ECHO
The Education Department team at Trinity Christian College launched Project ECHO this academic year. The team meets virtually on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 3:30pm through the month of April. Our topic for this school year is Promoting Appropriate Behavior in the Classroom. Each session begins with a short didactic and then we review a deidentified case brought to us by one of our participants. This series is designed for all school personnel interested in learning more about how to support appropriate behavior in the classroom. If interested in participating (as a student or school personnel), please contact our Echo team at echo@trnty.edu.
Next Session: March 16 │ 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Dieter
Next session: April 20 │3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Workshop III: Improving Class Discussion presented by Dr. Bill Boerman-Cornell, Professor of Education.
